What if told you the amazing director of Attack the Block directed a fun, funny, hopeful children's adventure movie? Would that be something you'd be interested in? Because this is that! It's so good! No one saw it! Myself included! But now I did! I really enjoyed it!

me watching the kid who would be king: that's the kid who would be king
hahaha
*I look around*
*I realize I'm completely alone*
*a single tear rolls down my face*
*I sit with myself for a moment, contemplating myself, contemplating my desire to perform for others even if it means losing sense of myself*
*I wipe away my tear*
*I shake it off*
*I realize I honestly liked this movie and the fact that it has british Shazam! (2019) energy*
*I realize I also really liked the Zachary Levi vehicle Shazam! (2019)*
*I write this review*
*I hate it but I publish it anyway*
*time goes on*

By far the best King Arthur movie since 1981.

"That's what evil does: it turns us against each other to distract from itself!"
It's so nice to see a completely uncynical, non-franchise, totally kid-driven fantasy movie again. The story is (expectedly) by-the-books and the direction fringes on some Paul-King-esque inspiredness but isn't quite bold enough to get there. That said, the character writing is actually pretty solid, the kid cast really grows on you, and some of the action is legitimately suspenseful. So many truth bombs, too! This movie knows exactly what it wants to say and totally goes for it...though it's in a way that's got enough levity and tongue-in-cheek humor that it doesn't feel too heavy-handed.
Other things I liked: music was super good, loved the blend…

All you need to know about this movie is that the older Merlin is Patrick Stewart wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt in every scene.

A kids rule kind of movie that I was not into at all when it started out, but strangely grew on me as the story went along.
"There's something written on the guard. Put it into Google Translate ... It means "Sword of Arthur". What if it's the Sword in the Stone?"
So you can pretty much assume from the title that our main character Alex played by Louis Ashbourne Serkis pulls the Sword from the Stone and becomes the new King Arthur, and that part is indeed super cheesy. I mean the kid and his best pal are super sweet, but I was just not enjoying them as the leads. But then the fantasy elements came into play which…

Really wasn't expecting this film to stick with me as much as it did, let alone watch it again so soon. Not only is The Kid Who Would Be King thoroughly enjoyable (pacing is sooooooooo much tighter on second viewing), exceptionally directed, very well acted (especially when you consider that this has an ensemble of mostly child actors), has great cinematography, production design and VFX, an incredible score (one of my favorite film scores of the year thus far) and even has solid character-writing, but The Kid Who Would Be King is so refreshingly classical, wholesome and uncynical in its approach with so much genuine heart and sincerity that most mainstream films aimed at youths are lacking these days, and…

A satisfying sophomore feature from writer/director Joe Cornish. While The Kid Who Would Be King does fall somewhat short of Attack the Block-level greatness due to some inconsistent pacing and feeling somewhat overlong, there's plenty to love here. The performances are great (with the MVP being Angus Imrie, though Rebecca Ferguson is clearly having fun in her role), the characters are decently written, the fight sequences are fun and very well staged (especially when you consider that this is Cornish's first time working on a larger budgeted and scaled project compared to the indie budgeted and somewhat more contained Attack the Block) and even the score is super unique (those synths!!!).
But most of all, The Kid Who Would Be King…

2019 list - Click HEREThis movie was just a wonderful surprise. How many films (like this) have we seen that just become straight-up forgettable? How many "kids movies" in this vein push boundaries and pay close attention to detail? The answer is "not very many." Many movies like this just don't put forth enough effort to appease both kids and their parents. This move changes that trend by providing laughs, fun and intrigue for the whole family. This thing would have rocked my world as a kid and I would have held it with me for a long time. This is the perfect "Game of Thrones" level story for the younger audience; without the vulgarity/violence.…
